10 Ways to Type Cangjie Faster
Practical habits that move you from hunting for codes to typing at conversation speed, from touch-typing and chunking to measuring progress.
Key takeaways
- Speed comes from not thinking about individual radicals: common components become single finger movements.
- Stop checking the candidate bar for characters with unique codes.
- Practise your weakest shapes deliberately, and measure characters per minute weekly.
1. Touch-type the radical keys
If your eyes leave the screen, you lose more time than any code costs. Drill the 24 radical keys until you can press 日 A, 竹 H, 卜 Y without looking.
2. Learn components as chunks
Fast typists don’t think “卜, 口” for the speech radical; they think YR as one movement. The same goes for 糹 VF, 門 AN, 辶 Y and 艹 T. Chunks like these appear in thousands of characters:
| Character | Cangjie code | Radicals | Quick |
|---|---|---|---|
| 說 | YRCRU | 卜Y口R金C口R山U | YU |
| 紅 | VFM | 女V火F一M | VM |
| 問 | ANR | 日A弓N口R | AR |
| 這 | YYMR | 卜Y卜Y一M口R | YR |
| 草 | TAJ | 廿T日A十J | TJ |
3. Trust unique codes
Most Cangjie codes produce exactly one common character. Once you know a code, press Space without looking at the candidates. Only watch the bar for codes you know are shared.
4. Drill the top 500 until automatic
A few hundred characters make up most everyday text. Use the typing trainer with the top 500 set until accuracy stays above 95%.
5. Keep an error list
Each time you miss a character, note it. Weekly, look for the shared component behind your errors. It is usually one shape, such as 臼 (HX) or 乚 (U), causing several misses.
6. Use phrase suggestions
Many modern Cangjie input methods suggest likely next characters (聯想字). Selecting 習 after 學 with one key saves a full code.
7. Type real text daily
Copy a news paragraph for five minutes a day. Real text has the mix of characters and punctuation you actually need.
8. Learn punctuation shortcuts
Hunting for 「」 and 、 wastes surprising amounts of time. See Cangjie punctuation.
9. Don’t fall back on handwriting
Every time you switch to handwriting for a character you could decompose, you skip a learning opportunity. Look the character up instead.
10. Measure progress
Time yourself on the same kind of text each week and track characters per minute. Improvement is rarely linear: plateaus are normal and usually end when a new set of shapes becomes automatic.
