About ECJ.hk

ECJ.hk is a free reference for typing and writing Chinese characters. It started as an online Cangjie input method for Hong Kong users and has grown into a dictionary, a set of learning guides and practical tools for Cangjie, Quick, stroke order, radicals and handwriting.

What you can do here

• Type Chinese in your browser with the online Cangjie input method.
• Look up the Cangjie and Quick codes, stroke order, radical, stroke count and readings of over 11,000 characters in the dictionary.
• Learn Cangjie step by step with the Cangjie guides and improve handwriting with the writing guides.
• Practise with the typing trainer, practice sheet maker and other tools.

Data sources and licences

• Cangjie codes: a Cangjie 5 code table compiled for this site’s input method. Cangjie 3 codes come from the Unicode Unihan database (kCangjie).
• Readings, stroke counts, radicals, definitions, variants and Hong Kong grade levels: Unicode Unihan database, © Unicode, Inc., used under the Unicode License.
• Stroke order graphics, decompositions and etymology notes: Make Me a Hanzi (graphics under the Arphic Public License; dictionary data under the GNU LGPL). Animations use Hanzi Writer.
• Words and English glosses: CC-CEDICT, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0.
• Character frequency: Jun Da’s modern Chinese character frequency list, mapped to Traditional forms.
• Traditional–Simplified conversion: opencc-js, based on OpenCC (Apache License 2.0).

Accuracy

We check guide examples against the dictionary automatically when the site is built, so codes shown in articles always match the dictionary. Stroke order animations follow the mainland China standard; Hong Kong and Taiwan standards differ for a small number of characters. If you find an error, please let us know.
