Stroke order animator
Watch how each character is written stroke by stroke, then switch to practice mode and draw the strokes yourself. The tool checks each stroke as you go.
How to use
- Enter up to eight characters and press Show.
- Press ▶ to animate one character, or “Animate all” to play the whole word.
- Press ✍ to practise: draw each stroke in order and wrong strokes are rejected.
- Follow the → link to the character’s dictionary page for its Cangjie code and a printable sheet.
Why stroke order matters
Correct stroke order makes handwriting faster, better balanced and easier to read, and it is tested in Hong Kong primary schools. It also helps with Cangjie, since codes follow the order in which a character’s parts are written: top before bottom, left before right, outside before inside.
Animations use Make Me a Hanzi data, which follows the mainland China stroke order standard. Hong Kong’s 常用字字形表 differs for a small number of characters.
Frequently asked questions
Why is there no animation for some characters?
Stroke data covers about 9,500 common characters. Rare characters may not be included yet.
Does it work on phones and tablets?
Yes. Practice mode accepts finger and stylus input.
